Caring For The Elderly During Winter

Churchill Home Care Caring For The Elderly During Winter

With Autumn well and truly setting in, we’ve put together a handy guide on caring for the elderly during winter. Churchill Home Care provides care all year round from just £18 per hour for Hourly Care and £725 per week for Live-In Care.

First and foremost, make sure that your loved one gets the flu vaccine. The vaccine is free of charge on the NHS for people aged 65 and over. The flu can cause serious illness in the elderly so it’s important that they get it every year.

You can help prevent falls by keeping doorways, halls and stairs free of autumn leaves as they become slippery when wet. Ensure that hallways are well lit and that the floors are free of obstacles such as shoes and that any rugs have a non-slip bottom or are secured down.

Help to keep your loved one warm by organising their wardrobe so they can easily access warmer, winter clothes. You can also set-up their central heating to help maintain a consistent, warm temperature. Ensure that any causes of drafts are sealed. It is also important to check the batteries and test all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors throughout their home.

Remind your loved one that they need to keep hydrated, it is especially important to keep well hydrated when the central heating is on. So drinking water regularly is important, it helps to regulate body temperature and is essential for the functions of cells, tissues, organs and healthy brain function.

When caring for the elderly during winter, organise their medicine cabinet to ensure that everything is in date and it is stocked with all the essentials like cold medicine, cough syrup, paracetamol and immune boosters like Vitamin C.
