What are Direct Payments?
If your local council or local authority agrees to allocate you a Personal Health Budget or Social Care Funding following your assessment; one of the ways in which you can receive it is via a Direct Payments. This is an alternative to them arranging the services on your behalf.
Ways You Can Receive Your Direct Payments
- To a bank account – The money can be paid directly into the bank account of the person receiving care. If it is to be paid to a person representing them, then it must be paid into a separate account to their personal one. This is to clearly show how the money is being spent on care or support.
- Prepaid Card – A prepaid card is similar to a debit card and can be used in the same way. A prepaid card has the money loaded onto the card and is not linked to a bank account.
The Advantages of Direct Payments
Receiving a Direct Payment allows you to have more control over the support you receive, as long as it is in line with the agreed-upon care plan.
It allows you to choose who provides your care and allows you to arrange the care at the times that are most suitable to you with the people who you’d prefer to receive care from.
Ways You Can Use Direct Payments
Your Direct Payment can only be used to pay for support that has been agreed upon in your care plan. Some of the ways in which your Direct Payment can be used, but are not limited to are as follows:
- Personal Care.
- Respite Care for when Carers take a break.
- A Personal Assistant who provides support.
- One-Off Social Care equipment purchases.
- Day Care opportunities such as day centre visits or activities.
